Marketing Case Study

Sims 4

Sims 4 is a simulation type game which was released on the 4th of September 2014. You can only play this game as a single player. This game was developed by Maxis and The Sims Studio and was published by Electronic Arts. The platforms you play in are Microsoft Windows and OS X.

On this game you can create your own character, choose your own storyline, have a family, have whatever house you want (including building one). You can basically do whatever you want. The game has the same concept as its predecessor, The Sims 3; players control their Sims in various activities and can form relationships. The game, like the rest of the series, does not have a defined final goal; gameplay is nonlinear. The Create-a-Sim and Build Mode tools have been redesigned to allow more versatility when creating game content. Emotional state plays a larger role in game play than in previous games in the series, with effects on social interaction, user interface, and personality.

SteelSeries and Electronic Arts announced a series of themed peripherals to promote The Sims 4, including a pair of headphones, a computer mouse that lights up in accordance with Sims’ in-game emotional states, and a mousepad featuring a render of various Sim groups. A demo was released to the public displaying the new Create a Sim partition of the game in which is supplied, free of charge to anyone. TV spots were also produced narrated by actor Charlie Day.

Also they advertised the game by using social media, for example: They uploaded a trailer on youtube showing the new features the game has compared to the last one, they used facebook to publish the game cover to show when it’s was coming out and what was going to include.

Illustration Evaluation

Character 1- A male marine for a third person shoot-’em-up set in a post apocalyptic world. The game is aimed at a mainly teenage/early twenties male audience.

Character 2- A child-friendly mascot for a new games company that will have its own platforming game and cartoon series.

Character 3- A female soldier for a new action- adventure game set in a (fictional) contemporary war in the Middle East, designed to appeal to both a male and female market.

For character 1 I decided to draw a character that had a cool uniform which would caught the audience’s attention. He has a hat and the thing that he has on his mouth is like a machine that produces oxygen. Also on his back he has something similar to a backpack that contains guns and many more weapons.

For character 2 I decided to draw a lion just because children nowadays really like them (including me) the lion has a cute face so it won’t scare children. Also, he has a zig zag line dividing his face and what I was planning to do was to paint half of the face pink and the other maybe purple so it would show children that being different is alright even if you have a different colour from others.

For character 3 I decided to draw a character that is appealing for both genders. The soldier is a female that has an amazing body and the reason I drew that was because I know that most males nowadays like to see women with a curvy and elegant body. In my opinion I think this will also appeal to women because on my drawing the girl has a body that most women want to have as well.

Narrative

Narrative

Game- Hello Neighbor

“Hello Neighbor “is a strategy and stealth game which was developed by Dynamic Pixels and published by tinyBuild. The game was released on the 19th of October 2016. Also the game was updated later on and now allows you to do more stuff than the first one. This game can only be played on a computer.

When the game was first released it didn’t really had a narrative, you had to keep playing it and try to figure it out what to do. After the game was updated the developer gave us a narrative.

The game is about a guy that just moved in and finds out that his neighbour has been doing suspicious things, so he has to go inside the neighbour’s house to find out what he’s up to without getting caught. When people read the games summary they think that “Hello Neighbor” is just one more of those mysterious games that have challenges etc… That is actually wrong. The game is actually pretty scary and unpredictable. I would say that the target audience are from people around 16 to 19.

Before the game was updated “Hello Neighbor” was pretty normal, you only had to invade the neighbour’s house and try to find out what he has inside, it wouldn’t really let you do anything. Because of that I’m going to describe how they used the narrative on the updated version of this game which is called “Hello Neighbor Alpha”.

On “Hello Neighbor Alpha” I think the type of narrative they used was interactivity. When the game first starts it shows the suspicious neighbour staring through the window at the main character with binoculars witching him arriving to his new house, then we start playing as the main character. The ending if this game depends on the choices you make. As you play the game sometimes the game stops itself so it can show you what the neighbour is doing but it always depends in what you’re doing.

The actual point of the game is to discover what the neighbour has inside his basement. As you play the game you’ll get to hear children screaming, you’ll get to see the neighbour fighting with mannequins which actually gives you Goosebumps.

To conclude the reason the game’s narrative is interactivity is because we will only get to see a narrative based on the players actions. For example: when the main character looks at the window there’s  going to be a time where the game will show the neighbour going inside this mysterious door making a lot o noise and then coming out haply jumping.

Character Analysis

Knack is a game published by Sony Computer Entertainment and developed by Japan Studio. The genre of the game action-adventure and is about a creation called Knack that is trying to aid humanity in the war against Goblins.

He has the ability of connecting relics to his body which makes him stronger and able to defeat the. He can also connect other materials onto his body, such as; ice, wood, metal, clear crystals and poison.

This character interests me because he is pretty strong and when he has all those materials connected to his body he looks awesome. Also the design is very unique and very appealing. His personality is also really nice, making him look stronger and also it helps the game develop nicely.

What can you take from this if you had to design your own game character?

  • Personality: Knack’s personality is kind of nice and rough at same time and that makes him cooler.

  • Materials he has on his body: Knack’s body looks like a jewel because of the many materials he has connected onto it.

  • Colours: The colours Knack has on him look lively and powerful, for examples; He has the colour red which in my opinion connotes to power and strength

Genre

Genre – Action – adventure

3 games:

  • Alice: Madness Returns
  • Lego Marvel’s Avengers
  • Watch Dogs

Alice: Madness Returns

This game has similarities with the normal “Alice in Wonderland” we know, the game is based on that but of course the story is a bit different (really different). The game is about a girl named Alice that became an orphan and had to become a prostitute because  of lack of money. Of course when people know this they’ll automatically think that this game has nothing to do with “Alice in Wonderland” but that’s not actually the case, later on she actually goes to Wonderland. The main difference between this game the actual ‘’ Alice in Wonderland” is the fact that the game has lots of blood, enemies and weird creatures. Even though it’s a bit bloody, the game is full of adventures and very fun. The game age range is 18+ and it relates to the genre I choose because it has action, different levels and has many adventures which is pretty much required for the genre I decided to write about. Furthermore, although the game is pretty bloody is not considered horror, the game only has one genre which is obviously action – adventure. Moreover this game is for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows.

Lego Marvel’s Avengers

As the game name says, this game is based on the Marvels Avengers. Lego Marvel’s Avengers has over two hundred playable characters and it’s an action – adventure game that can be played by people of any race and gender. Also it’s very suitable for over six years old children. The game can be defined as part of the action – adventure genre because it has different levels, many adventures and action. The platforms for this game are; PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and many more.

Watch Dogs

What is the game about?

“In the backstory of Watch Dogs, a computer hacker is discovered to have been behind the Northeast blackout of 2003, which led to eleven deaths. This event prompted the Blume Corporation to develop ctOS (Central Operating System). The ctOS supercomputer connects to everyone and everything — including personal informationsecurity cameras, and traffic lights, effectively making ChicagoIllinois (the setting of the game), the most technologically advanced city in the world.”

Because I have never played this game I decided to paste an accurate source giving a summary of what the game is about, the link is down below.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_Dogs

This game can be defined as part of action – adventure genre because it has many adventures and action. Also this game has a subgenre which is “third person shooter and this means that this is a game in which the player character is visible on-screen. The platforms for this game are: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and many more.

If I were to make my own game I would like have many adventures, different levels and lots of action. Also I would love to include an option where the audience can create their own character so it will be suitable for both genders. Furthermore throughout the game the audience would have different options which would guide them to different paths which in my opinion it’s pretty exciting.

Theme: Gender

3 games:

  • Call of Duty
  • GTA V (5)
  • Knack

Call of Duty:

Call of Duty is a game which was released on the 29 of October 2003 and can be played in basically every platform for example; PS3, PS4, Xbox 306, etc…. The game is based in war which obviously contains violence and makes it clear to the audience that the game is specifically for males. Also the age range for this game is over 18 ( it depends on each game ) Although females also play the game, if we compare the percentages of who plays more, males percentage is higher than them (females). Also when you play the game the characters are all male soldiers. I find this patriarchal because it’s basically telling the audience that males are more powerful than females and that they are the only ones capable of ending wars. In my opinion this game tells female audience that they are incapable of fighting independently like the soldiers from the game do. What I would do differently is that I would put female soldiers on the game so it would tell female audience that they can also fight independently and that they are capable of doing what males do.

GTA V:

GTA 5 was released on the 17 of September 2013 for PS3 and Xbox One and later on in 2014 and 2015 for PS4 and Microsoft Windows. It can be played on the platforms I just referred to. The can only be played by people that have reached the age 18 and so on. The game contains violence, bad language, sexual references, etc… The game is mostly played by males because the main characters are men as well. Females also play GTA 5, but not as much as males do. On the game females are represented as sexual objects, they show too much skin and the way they act is as if they were prostitutes. In my opinion that was a way to attract more males to play the game because nowadays almost every male want vulgar females so by showing them females that look like prostitutes, they will get more male audience attention. Furthermore I think it will also catch female attention because on the game they’re showing female with bodies that are not only desired by male but also by female. What I would change in the game is them females that look like prostitutes because that gives the idea that all females are easy to get.

Knack:

Knack was released on November 2013 in Europe and February 2014 in Japan. This game is about a scientist that found a strange ball who’s actually a monster and is called Knack. This character collects relics, metal, ice and wood to fight with the enemies which are called goblins. The objective of the game is to find how Knack’s existence started and as long you pass levels you will get some clues. Knack it’s usually played by boys because it contains a lot of monsters and actions, which give boys more desire to play, bit it can also be played by girls, because it’s a really enthusiastic game with a interesting story full of mysteries. As a “ex-player” I find it very good for both genders. Unfortunately they only have one female which is the enemy, at first she’s quite powerful but obviously because the main character is male she loses her fight. In my opinion this is basically telling the audience that even if females try to fight a male they will end up losing. What I would change in the game is adding more females so it would catch not only the males attention but also female, because they’d see that females are also powerful.
